Case Study:
Westcoast Black Theatre Troupe

I've traveled to see a show from the Westcoast Black Theatre Troupe live and it was a great production! Their mission is to "celebrate and promote the African American Experience through musical theatre and the development of African American artist" and they do a great job at that.

The objective in this project was " To create a dynamic visual blend of live-action and animated graphics to reveal the logo for the Westcoast Black Theater Troupe. To evoke the excitement and passion found at all their performances through animated graphics ."

PROCESS

What to do ... What to do...
For the ideation process, our team was to come up with 2-3 concept ideas for how we were to capture the excitement of the Westcoast Black Theatre Troupe performances in order to excite and persuade audiences to come see the shows in a 15 second long animation with a logo reveal.

Style Development
The prompt that we received for this project stated that the WBTT wanted a blend of live action and animated graphics to evoke excitement within audiences to inspire people to come see the show.

"Bringing Broadway to Sarasota" My first idea was to crash zoom into different Images from different WBTT show performances and bring the images to life by making the main subject characters move and motion parallax the images behind them. The WBTT logo will be revealed by crash zooming into it.

My second idea was to have dancing silhouettes jump from one image to another and transform into the different figures from each image and we follow the figure until it leads us to the WBTT logo.

It was decided that we were going to take both of my concept ideas and combine them into one and have dancing silhouettes jump in and out of the motion parallaxed images while crash zooming from one to the other which will eventually lead us to the Westcoast Black Theatre Troupe Logo.
1st Pass Animation
The first pass of animation involved a camera crash zooming down a path showing the slow parallaxed movements of images coming to life until we get all the way to the logo reveal.

2nd Pass Animation
For this pass we were told to make the ending have the same excitement as the rest of the animation, to play with textures on the floor, play with the color palette, and to incorporate more of the Sarasota aspect into the piece.

Revisions
For this pass we added limited the color palette and further improved on aesthetic and animation quality.
