Case Study: Wonka Title Logo Reveal Animation

Since beginning my college career in 2019, I have discovered my love of design, so when I received the opportunity to design a Logo for the up and coming Willy Wonka movie entitled "Wonka", I was ecstatic. I had always enjoyed the character and have always enjoyed the previous iteration of his story "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory " movie, so it was like magic to feel like I am a part of that franchise and introducing it to a new audience.

Artist of the Title: Wonka

The objective in this project was "to create a logo title lock up for one of the highlighted films below that are set to hit theaters 2023 and 2024. This animation will be used for trailers in the theater, online, and on TV."

Idea 1...Idea 2...Idea 3

For the ideation process, our team was to come up with 2-3 concept ideas for how we were to design the logo and how we would animate the logo's reveal to the audience within a span of 5 to 7 seconds.

Style Development

The prompt that we received for this project stated that we could choose to do 2D animation or 3D animation and it was decided that we would head towards the 3D route. The film is set to take place when Willy Wonka is a young man, and will show the story of how he met the Oompa Loompas, who eventually become his working staff.

For this logo design we wanted to take the initial style of previous lettering iterations from previous logos but akin it more to Wonka's personality rather than the logo just being about candy.

Willy Wonka is known for his love of candy and is most famously known for his Wonka Chocolate bars. We decided that for our first direction, since we assume that as a young man he still loves candy,  we would make his logo a piece of chocolate  which would give a sense of familiarity to the audience.

But this idea ended up leaning more to the candy side than we wanted.

For the next two ideas we decided to incorporate some of the objects that Willy Wonka was known for like his cane, top hat. The new iteration of Wonka for the upcoming movie is seen carrying a suitcase so we decided that we would incorporate those items into the animation sequence.

We decided to combine these two aesthetics by using the 'Wonka' with the swoops and using the briefcase as an animation prop to present the logo.

Concept Storyboards

Our animation concepts involved having a camera pan/zoom through a scene of Willy Wonka's room with his different and as we move through the room we would see items move. As the camera continues to pan forward, the audience would see a briefcase start to open which would reveal the logo.

Storyboard V01 : Too Long. We spent too much time getting to the logo reveal and we only had 5-7 seconds that we were required to work with.

Storyboard V02

Due to having only 5 to 7 seconds to work with we decided that we had too many things going on in our sequence that we had to end up decreasing our number of shots to one pan and zoom into the briefcase as the logo is revealed. Items moving in the scene would lead our eye throughout different parts of the scene which would end with the suitcase opening and revealing the logo.

1st Pass Animation

Our animation concepts involved having a camera pan/zoom through a scene of Willy Wonka's room with his different and as we move through the room we would see items move. As the camera continues to pan forward, the audience would see a briefcase start to open which would reveal the logo.

2nd Pass Animation

For this pass we removed some of the furniture from the foreground so that we could get to see what was on Willy Wonka's desk sooner, due to the time constraints. This resulted in having to move the camera in less space which made the room seem smaller and more intimate which is what my team was going for.

Type and Camera Angle Test

Revisions

For this pass we added some animation within other objects in the scene to bring the room to life.
